As from January 1, 2014 trains on the Betuweroute use green electricity.

Rail transport is known as a sustainable modality. From 1 January 2014 it has become even more sustainable through the use of green electricity on the Betuweroute. The rail operators which use the Betuweroute have jointly purchased wind energy. They do this via CIEBR. They are able to achieve the best price on the European market by combining the power of procurement forces.

To ensure that green electricity is provided, so-called Guarantees of Origin are granted. These are certificates prove that
electricity is from wind, hydro, solar or biomass power. The certificates for the Betuweroute are provided to CIEBR for the years 2014 and 2015. The guarantees are issued specifically for the production of wind energy.
